Green Lung are a psychedelic/occult rock quintet based out of London, England. Founded in 2017 and drawing from occult and pagan themes, along with folklore, myths and legends of Britain,[1] the band's sound harkens back to the golden days of psychedelic rock and proto-metal, injecting those classic sounds with occult venom and punk energy.[2]

The band would garner critical acclaim with their 2019 debut album Woodland Rites and immediately made an impact in the London underground rock scene, only garnering further critical acclaim with their 2021 follow-up Black Harvest.[3] To date the band has released two albums, following on from a demo and EP, and has shared the stage with a wide range of heavy acts.

History[]

Green Lung was founded in 2017 as a quartet comprising Tom Templar (vocals), Scott Black (guitar), Matt Wiseman (drums) and Andrew Cave (bass). Not long after forming the band released a demo, Green Man Rising, in June 2017, with a single launch a week later.[4] The band performed a handful of early shows in the autumn of that year.[5][6] Recording more material that November, the band released a single, Lady Lucifer, early the next year followed by the EP Free The Witch on 19 February. Free The Witch gained instant acclaim,[7][8] including a 10/10 score from Metal Temple.[9]

Following frequent shows including a Halloween all-dayer,[10] work began on a debut album in September 2018; the band now a five-piece, with the addition of John Wright (keyboards). Announced in early 2019 along with the band signing with German label Kozmik Artifactz,[11] Woodland Rites was released on 20 March 2019 to critical acclaim from the likes of New Noise Magazine (4/5)[12] and Distorted Sound Magazine (9/10)[13]. Woodland Rites was also ranked #13 on The Obelisk's Top albums of 2019, along with being awarded the best debut album of 2019.[14]

To support Woodland Rites, Green Lung toured with the likes of Puppy[15] and Deathbell[16] for the band's first tour of Europe. The band announced further touring and festival appearances (Including Desertfest London and Esbjerg Fuzztival) but plans for 2020 were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Green Lung recorded various songs for tribute releases such as a cover of Black Sabbath's "Snowblind" for Vol. 4 Redux (2020, Magnetic Eye Records) and Alice Cooper's "Under My Wheels" for Killer: 50 Years Later (2021, Pale Wizard Records). With shows canceled, work began on a follow-up album in the Autumn of 2020 at Giant Wafer Studios in rural mid-Wales, over the course of two weeks with producer Wayne Adams. All samples were sourced from the local countryside and from instruments found in the studio, including the opening vocal of ‘The Harrowing’ which was recorded on a whim after the band broke into the local church (the organ can be heard creaking in the background).[17][18]

Announced in June 2021 and released on 22 October 2021 via Finnish label Svart Records,[19] Black Harvest topped the Bandcamp pre-order charts and was met with near-universal acclaim[20] from the likes of Kerrang (4/5),[21] Angry Metal Guy (4/5),[22] New Noise Magazine (4/5),[23] Distorted Sound Magazine (9/10),[24] Blabbermouth (9/10)[25] and Metal Injection (10/10)[26]. Following an appearance at Bloodstock, Green Lung embarked on a UK tour in support of the album.[27]

After Black Harvest's release, Green Lung announced live plans for 2022 including Mystic Festival and Roadburn Festival. Following a number of festival appearances over the summer, the band are scheduled to play Damnation Festival in November, and will support Clutch on their winter 2022 European tour. On 3 November 2022 it would be announced that Green Lung had signed with Nuclear Blast Records.[28]
