Gravetemple is a blackened drone side project curated by American guitarist Stephen O'Malley, Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar and Australian electronics performer Oren Ambarchi. All three contributors had previously performed with Sunn O))) and around the time of this project's formation a counter-project known as Burial Chamber Trio was also curated. This counter band featured the same lineup but with Greg Anderson in place of Anderson. However, unlike Burial Chamber Trio this project would expand further beyond it's initial intents.
The trio formed in United States in the summer of 2006 to perform a series of live shows in Israel, while Israel was engaged in the 2006 Lebanon War. In Summer 2008 the trio reformed together with Australian drummer Matt "Skitz" Sanders for a short European tour with Asva.[1] Gravetemple toured again in 2013 alongside Russell Haswell and surrounding an appearance at Roadburn Festival.[2] Further performances have taken place as far as 2018 and 2019 at various electronic festivals.
Gravetemple released The Holy Down in 2007 through Southern Lord Records; Ambient/Ruin in 2008 and Le Vampire de Paris in 2009 were Self-released. A third album in Impassible Fears saw release in 2017 via Svart Records.[3]
Gravetemple is a sacred metaphor & psychedelic spiritual abstraction. They combine metal instrumentation with feedback, drones and minimalist composition. Expect a disorientating mix of lighting and sonic power, and an unforgettable physiological experience, communicated via a wall of amplification.
