Gateway is the third full-length album by stoner metal band Bongzilla. It was released in September 2002 by Relapse Records. The title of the album is a reference to the term "gateway drug", used to describe an apparently more-benign drug that can lead to the use of more dangerous drugs. Notably, Gateway is also the only Bongzilla studio release to feature Cooter Brown on bass.
Background[]
Gateway would be the first Bongzilla release where the band would work with Wendy Schneider, recording at Coney Island Studios in March 2002. Schneider would also mix the album that same month at Smart Studios in Madison. Finally the album would be mastered on 3 June at Colossal Mastering by Daniel Stout. Malleus Rock Art Lab would contribute the artwork for this release.
Gateway was initially released in September 2002 by Relapse Records on CD. A vinyl edition was produced that same year by Modus Operandi and limited to 1000 copies.[1] Hydro-Phonic Records would re-issue the album on vinyl in 2012 along with much of the band's material and eventually Relapse would do their own vinyl issue in 2019.
Gateway garnered mostly positive reviews at the time of release, notably by AllMusic (4/5),[2] Austin Chronicle,[3] Exclaim![4] and Cosmic Lava.[5]
