Foundations of Burden is the second studio album by the Arkansas doom metal band Pallbearer, notably the first studio recordings to feature drummer Mark Lierly. Produced by Billy Anderson, it would be released circa August 2014 via Profound Lore Records. A music video was produced for the album's lead single in the ten-minute song "The Ghost I Used To Be".[1]
Along with being the first Pallbearer album to chart (Peaking at #90 on the Billboard 200), Foundations of Burden would garner critical acclaim from several publications.[2][3]
Background[]
Work would begin on a follow-up to the critically acclaimed 2012 album Sorrow and Extinction in 2013, ultimately recording with Billy Anderson in the Spring of 2014. Details would surface on the album through the Summer as tours with Deafheaven[4] and Yob[5] would be announced. Singles in "Worlds Apart" and "The Ghost I Used to Be" would be released digitally to promote the record, the latter with a music video.
Foundations of Burden would see release on 19 August 2014, peaking at #90 on the Billboard 200[6] #14 on Billboard's Independent Albums Chart[7] and #10 on Billboard's Hard Rock Albums chart.[8] Foundations of Burden would garner critical acclaim upon release, currently holding an 88/100 score on Metacritic.[9]
Notably in a review via Pitchfork, scoring the album an 8.6/10 and awarding the "Best New Music" award that month, Brandon Stosuy would state the following of the record: "Foundations finds a band firing on all cylinders, and surpassing what seemed like a watermark for the genre. As obsessed as Pallbearer is with endings, the music here is timeless.".[10] A positive review from Invisible Oranges would praise the album heavily, stating "As followups to critically-hailed debut records go, Pallbearer’s Foundations of Burden checks many of the expected boxes. The production from the legendary Billy Anderson is cleaner, brighter, and clearer. The sonic palette has the requisite amount of expansion without compromising what brought people to Pallbearer in the first place. Structurally we’re in much the same ballpark as Sorrow: aside from a short, pretty Rhodes-driven interlude that flirts with pop, there are five roughly ten-minute songs that create a cycle. The band executes so well that despite the lack of curveballs, Foundations is exhilarating from front to back."[11]
Foundations of Burden would also garner acclaim from several other publications such as The Line of Best Fit (8/10),[12] The Quietus,[13] AV Club (A),[14] Exclaim! (9/10),[15] Absolute Punk (8.8/10), Paste Magazine (8.2/10) and No Rip Chord (8/10) among others. Foundations of Burden would rank #1 on Decibel's Top 40 Albums of 2014[16] and would rank #75 on Decibel's Top 100 Doom Metal Albums of All Time.<ref>[https://rateyourmusic.com/list/tomkrat/decibel-the-top-100-doom-metal-albums-of-all-time/ Rate Your Music
