For Those Which Are Asleep is the debut studio album by The Skull which at the time featured three members of Trouble and the first time Eric Wagner, Ron Holzner and Jeff Olson would be on a full-length together since 1995. Released in the Fall of 2014 with a tour to follow, it would attain critical acclaim.
History[]
In 2012 The Skull would be founded by Trouble members Eric Wagner, Ron Holzner and Jeff Olson, along with guitarist Lothar Keller. The band had been performing frequent shows in 2012 and 2013,[1] mostly Trouble material but with original songs sprinkled in. On 26 February 2014 The Skull would announce that they had signed with Tee Pee Records to release an album, preceded by a single in Sometime Yesterday Mourning which featured the band's first original song and a cover of the Trouble song "The Last Judgement" in light of the song's thirtieth anniversary.[2][3] Former Trouble bassist Chuck Robinson would briefly join on guitar though Matt Goldsborough would take his place in the recording sessions, though the former would design the album cover.[4][5]
Details would surface on The Skull's debut album that August including the track listing, album cover and release date.[6] For Those Which Are Asleep would see release on 4 November 2014. The CD version would contain the Sometime Yesterday Mourning single as bonus tracks while the Vinyl version would be released in Gold and Clear Red, both limited.
For Those Which Are Asleep would attain positive reception, with numerous comparisons to Trouble's early doom metal years. The Obelisk would praise the album, stating that "The Skull‘s debut benefits greatly from the pedigree and experience of the band’s members, and there’s no getting around the band’s link to Trouble — nor do I think they’re asking their audience to; they do close with that cover after all — but For Those Which are Asleep also marks the beginning of a branching out from that foundation, and hopefully it’s just the start of a progression that continues to take on a life of its own as it moves forward. For now, within classic doom, I can’t think of anything I could ask from these players that it doesn’t deliver.".[7] For Those Which Are Asleep would also rank #8 on The Obelisk's top 30 albums of 2014.[8]
Other critics that elicited praise to For Those Which Are Asleep would include the likes of Metal Rules (4/5),[9] Angry Metal Guy (4/5),[10] Metal Life (4.5/5),[11] Markus' Heavy Music Blog (9/10)[12] and Metal Assault (9.5/10).[13]
