Five Legged Dog is an acoustic double-album by The Melvins. Recorded in 2020 during the pandemic, it would be announced in July 2021. Comprising of 36 tracks, Five Legged Dog features acoustic renditions of Melvins songs spanning the band's entire career, along with previously unrecorded covers.[1] At nearly two-and-a-half hours in length, it is the longest Melvins album.
Background[]
On 21 July 2021, some months after the release of Working With God and an acoustic EP in Slithering Slaughter, Five Legged Dog would be announced[2] with an acoustic rendition of "Night Goat" premiered.[3] In an initial announcement, Buzz would state the following about the album: “I knew I wanted to do something ridiculously big. 36 songs reimagined by us acoustically is certainly ridiculous but it works. The magic of the songs is still there regardless of it being acoustic. Since we weren’t touring we had the time to do something of this size. I’m very excited about this record. Dale and Steven did a fantastic job on this. I think it’s a very special record. I can’t think of anyone else who’s done something like this.” Crover would follow up with a statement on the album and the recording of "Night Goat": “I think people will be surprised that we can do an acoustic version of a song like ‘Night Goat’ without losing any of the heaviness. We also worked hard on the vocal arrangements. People are going to freak out!”
The next song for the album in "Pitfalls in Serving Warrants" would be previewed on 16 August 2021,[4] with Buzz stating the following on the song: "’Pitfalls’ is one of my favorites. A severely underrated song and one that works very well on acoustic.”.[5] "Revolve" would then premiere on 13 September 2021.[6] Buzz would state the following of Revolve: “I wrote Revolve on an unplugged electric guitar in a hotel room in San Francisco and it sounded great! Obviously then it wasn’t hard to make an all acoustic version of Revolve work. It’s a great riff.”[7] Notably an acoustic rendition of "Revolve" (Along with "Let God Be Your Gardener", which also appears on this album) were composed for the King Buzzo 10" This Machine Kills Artists.
Five Legged Dog would initially see release via Ipecac Recordings on digital and double CD on 15 October 2021. A 4LP multi-color vinyl box set would see release on 28 January 2022. Notably, former Melvins and Butthole Surfers bassist Jeff Pinkus contributes banjo and vocals to "Don’t Forget to Breathe" and "Everybody’s Talking".
