Eye of The Skull is the upcoming sixth studio album by the Louisville heavy metal band Stonecutters. Recorded over a couple years after numerous conflicts in the earlier portion of the decade, Eye of The Skull would be set for a September 2023 release on CD, Cassette and Digital with Vinyl to come later. It is notably the first studio album to feature guitarist Chris Leffler since 2013's Creatio ex Nihil, the first album to feature drummer Johnny Wooldridge since 2015's Blood Moon and the first Stonecutters album to feature bassist Jayce Wraley (Shi - 死, Crown of Serpents).
Background[]
In 2021, Brian Omer would announce that a new Stonecutters album was in the works, working with former members Chris Leffler and Johnny Wooldridge, along with new bassist Jayce Wraley. This lineup would perform a return show at Headliners Music Hall on 22 April 2022, with Batwizard and Ohlm. Follow-up shows with this lineup would take place throughout the year with a new song "Scowlers" released on 2 September 2022 with artwork by Jeff Gaither.[1] A second single in "The Search For Rest" would follow on 16 December 2022 with art by original Stonecutters artist William David Pollard. That same month it would be announced that Omer had secured the rights to the Stonecutters name on a state and federal level.
A third single in "One of Us", done as a tribute to the Tod Browning film Freaks, was released digitally on 28 July 2023.[2] It had also been revealed Tim Lehi would be doing the artwork for the album, having previously done art for the likes of Saviours, High on Fire, Acid King and Earthless among others.[3]
Following a string of shows in 2023, including a gig honoring the tenth anniversary of Creatio ex Nihil, Stonecutters would announce a release party for Eye of The Skull at Headliners Music Hall on 15 September 2023 with Shi - 死 and Sinistrum as support.[4] The CD and Cassette versions of the album would be released that day, with a vinyl edition to follow in December 2023.
