Extra-Capsular Extraction is the first EP and first official release by the Washington drone metal band Earth. Recorded at Smegma Studios in October 1990, this EP presents three of the seven songs in the recording sessions, with Kurt Cobain (Nirvana, Fecal Matter) and Kelly Canary (Dickless, Teen Angels) as guest vocalists on the second track.
Originally it was released in 1991 on a cardboard sleeve. In 2002 and 2006 Extra-Capsular Extraction would be issued on vinyl for the first time, with the first two tracks merged together on Side A. Notably a VHS was produced by Sub Pop for the EP. This video itself is Earth's first album 'Extra-Capsular Extraction' in it's entirety accompanying bizarre mainly black and white visuals from vintage sleaze films, although there's also clips of explosions, operations, etc too. No footage or images of the band are featured at all throughout. Limited to just 100 copies, it is among the rarest Earth releases.[1]
The remaining songs in the sessions would be re-issued as bonus tracks on Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars. The Ajna Offensive would release the entire demo in 2000 on clear vinyl, limited to 360 copies (For each degree of the Earth).[2] Finally, Southern Lord Records would re-master and re-issue the entire Smegma Studios sessions as A Bureaucratic Desire for Extra-Capsular Extraction in 2010.
