Ecate is the seventh studio album by the Italian psychedelic band Ufomammut. Italian for the pre-ellenic goddess "Hecate", Ecate is able to move toward the world of humans, the world of the gods and the world of the dead. With that concept and a more aggressive approach to the band's psychedelic doom sound,[1] Ecate would be released on 30 March 2015 via Supernatural Cat and Neurot Recordings to positive reviews.
Embracing a more aggressive take on their heavy sound the band would compose and release Ecate on 30 March 2015 via Supernatural Cat and Neurot Recordings to positive reviews. Italian for the pre-ellenic goddess "Hecate", Ecate is able to move toward the world of humans, the world of the gods and the world of the dead. Along with a tour of Europe (With Conan) to celebrate their seventh full-length the band also would embark on their first full tour of the United States and Canada in the band's history alongside Usnea. The band would perform the whole of Ecate on many of the shows, including a tour of Europe to further support the record. Going into 2016 the band would tour Australia and New Zealand for the first time and do another tour of Europe entitled "Ecate Farewell" before returning to the studio once again.
Background[]
Following extensive touring in support of the two Oro albums from 2012 to 2014, work would begin on the seventh album in the Fall of 2014, recording at Soms "Il Progresso", with mastering to follow in early 2015. A new song in "Plouton" would be revealed leading up to the album's release.[2] Neurot Recordings would handle the standard LP and CD releases while Ufomammut's label Supernatural Cat would release a special handcrafted LP edition limited to 500 copies.[3] To support the album, Ufomammut would tour Europe with Conan, following with the band's first full tour of the United States and Canada, alongside Usnea. The band would perform the whole of Ecate on many of the shows, including a tour of Europe to further support playing the entire album. Going into 2016 the band would tour Australia and New Zealand for the first time (With Monolord as support) and do another tour of Europe entitled "Ecate Farewell" before returning to the studio once again.
Ecate would attain praise from numerous publications upon release. Awarded a 9/10 by Music Connection, they would describe Ecate as "their catchiest yet—to the extent that 10-minute tracks wholly devoid of verse-chorus-verse structure could qualify as catchy. The experimental album salutes a goddess who can straddle the worlds of humans, ghosts and gods.".[4] Drowned in Sound, awarding an 8/10, would state that "rather than sitting on their laurels, in writing and recording Ecate it seems that Ufomammut have deliberately set out to write a record that’s all about executing the core ideas of the band’s musical vision as adeptly and concisely as possible.".[5] Other notable reviews would come from the likes of Louder Than War (8/10),[6] This is Not a Scene (8/10),[7] Angry Metal Guy (4.5/5)[8] and The Obelisk[9] among others.
