Dronevil (2005) |
Soundtrack From Film "Mabuta no Ura" (2005) |
dronevil (Also released as dronevil -final-) is the eighth studio album by Boris. It is a double album: the first LP, Drone, showcases a more ambient sound, while the second LP, Evil, is and showcases a heavy guitar-oriented doom metal sound. Though the two sides can be heard separately, the original intention is for both to be played simultaneously. The album was originally released on double vinyl with the artwork for this release done by Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O)))). 1,000 copies were pressed of this album, 200 of which were printed on grey vinyl with the other 800 copies pressed on black vinyl.[1][2]
On 8 August 2006 dronevil would be re-released as dronevil -final-. The re-issue would be released in gatefold hard cardboard cover, with each sleeve housing 1 CD. Included in each sleeve is three round transparent acetates printed with dotted/matrix designs, meant for superimposition. Each acetate represents one track (track title printed). Along with a remaster of the four original tracks from the original recordings, two exclusive songs from the same sessions would be included as bonus tracks.
With the re-issue, dronevil would attain more reception with various publications. Brian Way, writing for AllMusic and awarding the album four stars out of five, would note the molasses slow pace and rewards in patience, along with comparisons to The Flaming Lips' Zaireeka, an album that also required discs to be played on multiple systems.[3] Brainwashed would notably praise the album but insisted that the two discs should be played together as intended for full effect.[4] Finally, Pitchfork would award an 8.0/10 with Brandon Stosuy, describes the album as "totally stunning" and praise the overall substance, fluidity and dimension.[5]
