Downtown LA Rehearsal/Rifftape March 1998 is a rehearsal tape by Sunn O))). Recorded in March 1998 and released in 2018 for the band and Southern Lord Records' 20th Anniversary, it chronicles the very first recordings of the band.
Background[]
Sunn O))) had formed in March 1998 with a means to compose low-end drone in the vein of Earth. The band had recorded a rehearsal that same month on a boombox at Downtown Rehearsal Room 206 in Los Angeles. This is the earliest recording of the band, predating The Grimmrobe Demos by well over a month.
In early 2018, Southern Lord Records announced that they would be releasing a host of stuff for the label's 20th anniversary, including some special Sunn O))) releases and re-releases. Later announced on 17 April 2018 would be The Southern Lord Silver Anniversary Vinyl Series, which included this record as part of it.
The Rifftape would be released as a limited vinyl in conjunction with Southern Lord Records and Ideologic Organ, listed as SOMA031/sunn206.666. The pressings are as follows:
- 900 on black vinyl
- 500 on silver vinyl (Exclusive to the subscription series)
- 100 on white vinyl, machine numbering on front cover
