Death Magic Doom is the tenth studio album by the Swedish epic doom band Candlemass. Recorded in the Fall of 2008, it would be seeking a release on 27 March 2009. However, the album's release was delayed until 3 April 2009; the United States release date was 5 May 2009.[1] The second album to feature vocalist Robert Lowe, Death Magic Doom would receive critical acclaim along with a Grammis nomination.[2]
Background[]
Following tours of Europe and the United States in support of King of The Grey Islands, Candlemass would begin work on a tenth album. Robert Lowe would fly to Sweden to join the band for the recording sessions, which took place over ten days in Stockholm.[3] The working title for this album was "Hammer of Doom", which is the name of the album's second track, but the idea was abandoned due to there being a German festival of the same name (and notably perform in 2015.).[4]
Death Magic Doom would be promoted by singles for "Hammer of Doom" and "If I Ever Die", seeing release initially on 3 April 2009 after slight delays, peaking at #33 on the Swedish Charts[5] and #52 on the German Charts.[6] Notably a digipak edition would contain "Lucifer Rising" as a bonus track, re-recorded in the same sessions. The vinyl edition would feature "Lucifer Rising" and "White God" as a bonus 7". Lastly, a box set edition would feature a bonus DVD of the recording sessions in Stockholm and live footage from the 2008 North American Tour.
Death Magic Doom would receive critical acclaim from numerous publications. Keith Bergman, writing for Blabbermout and awarding a 9/10, would praise Death Magic Doom as "a ferocious, epic piece of dynamic heavy metal that stands with the best work in their storied history." along with echoing Leif Edling's sentiment that it would be "the best album since Nightfall.".[7] Both Sea of Tranquility and Metal Crypt would award 4.5 stars and praise Robert Lowe's vocal performance throughout.[8][9] Other notable reviews would include the likes of Metal Rules (4/5),[10] BraveWords (8.5/10),[11] Metal Obsession (9.5/10),[12] Chronicles of Chaos (9.5/10)[13] and Rock Hard Magazine (10/10).[14]
