Curious Volume is the eighth studio album by the American doom metal band Pentagram. Released in 2015, it would be the first Pentagram album since 1994's Be Forewarned to appear on Peaceville Records. ‘Curious Volume’ was recorded with Swedish producer Mattias Nilsson at studios in Baltimore, DC and VA, with additional vocal and guitar production in Knoxville, TN with Travis Wyrick.[1] Notably, it's also the first Pentagram album to feature more original songs than re-recorded compositions from the 1970s.
The album title is from the opening lines of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven": "Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary, over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore...". The album cover was also inspired by "The Raven" and is an interpretation based on that same story.[2]
Curious Volume would garner mostly positive reviews, notably from the likes of Angry Metal Guy,[3] More Fuzz[4] and Consequence of Sound.[5] Some critics would have a more mixed opinion of the record, namely Louder Sound[6] and Your Last Rites.[7]
