History[]

Conviction was started in 2013 by Olivier Verron who had been wishing to create such a band since the 90's when he discovered Doom Metal, but couldn't find any musician interested by the style back then. The first release, entitled "promo 2013", was composed, recorded and mixed in only 11 hours on Saturday, November 30, 2013. Consisting in four original tracks and a Deep Purple cover (Pictures Of Home), it started establishing the name of the project in the underground. This demo was released as a CDR, and later in digital format.

A digital single, Outworn, was then released in 2017. At this point, Sleeping Church Records started a project of tribute to Cathedral by the French Doom Metal scene. At this point, Olivier Verron decided to surround himself with musicians and to turn Conviction into a full band. He was joined by Frédéric Patte-Brasseur (Ataraxie, Funeralium) on guitar, Vincent Buisson (Mourning Dawn, Funeralium) on bass, and Rachid "Teepee" Trabelsi (Moonskin) on drums, to record the song Stained Glass Horizon. The tribute album, entitled "Doom or be Doomed : A French tribute to Cathedral" was released in 2019, featuring bands among which Ataraxie, Barabbas, Northwinds, Monolithe or Misanthrope.

The full band started then working on its first album, and signed a contract with Argonauta Records. Conviction's first album was released on January 22, 2021.

Musical style and influences[]

Conviction's style is pure old school Doom Metal, with a bit of psychedelic touches, mainly in the effects used by the band to colour its guitar sounds (phasers, delays, etc.) Conviction is influenced by Doom Metal acts like Saint Vitus, Count Raven, Pentagram, but also nineties Doom and Doom Death bands like My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Anathema, although Conviction doesn't use Death Metal vocals at all.

Olivier Verron claims to be influenced by guitar players Tony Iommi, Dave Chandler, Victor Griffin, Gaz Jennings, David Gilmour and Jimi Hendrix.
