Cobras and Fire: The Mastermind Redux is a studio album by the New Jersey rock band Monster Magnet. Released circa October 2015, it is a re-working and re-recorded rendition of the band's 2010 album Mastermind.
Background[]
On 21 July 2015 Monster Magnet would announce Cobras and Fire along with the song "Mastermind '69",[1] with "She Digs That Hole" premiered in September.[2] Dave Wyndorf would state the following in the album's press release: "With Cobras And Fire I wanted to present these songs in a much stranger and dirtier atmosphere. Less 'classic rock' and more...well, I’d guess I’d call it a deranged fusion of garage-psych, fuzz punk and movie soundtrack music. It’s almost completely re-recorded (with the bulk of the guitar and bass playing by co-producer Phil Caivano) and as in Milking The Stars I’ve added organ, piano, sitars and more to flesh out a completely new sound for these tunes."
Of note is a cover of the Temptations' 1969 classic "Ball of Confusion" that Wyndorf says is arranged to sound like a cross between Hawkwind and the Pink Fairies and an eight-minute "tripped out sonic adventure" that was assembled by producer "Evil" Joe Barresi that they're calling "I Live Behind the Paradise Machine Evil."[3]
Notably the re-working of "She Digs That Hole" would be released as a single with a re-recorded version of Superjudge in 2011. While the recording year isn't explicitly stated it's possible the album was recorded before Last Patrol and Milking The Stars. Also of note is Ed Mundell (Whom performed on the original Mastermind) and Chris Kosnik (Who was the bassist for Monster Magnet at the time) do not appear on the album.
Cobras and Fire would attain positive reception from the likes of Distorted Sound Magazine,[4] New Noise Magazine,[5] Echoes and Dust,[6] Smells Like Infinite Sadness[7] and Pop Matters.[8]
