Cloud Chamber is a collaborative album between Japanese experimental band Boris and Ghost guitarist Michio Kurihara. Recorded in 2006 and released in late 2008, it serves as their second collaborative album. Notably the album follows more of an abstract noise/drone style in the vein of the Boris With Merzbow releases.
Background[]
At some point in 2006 (Possibly in the same sessions as Rainbow) Boris and Michio Kurihara composed a second album of material, devoid of vocals and deviating into drone, noise and dark ambient. Cloud Chamber is limited to 1500 copies, packaged in a dark brown translucent jewel case with japanese obi strip. The booklet is multifolded on semitransparent material with silver print, sealed with a holographic Pedal Records seal.
Critical reception on Cloud Chamber is mixed, often negative. While Amoeba Records (Describing it as "...just the sort of storm surge of sound that lays defenseless listeners down as if prone on the slab, hypnotized for sacrifice; beware of drowning")[1] and Scaruffi (describing it as "more ambitious")[2] would give a positive reception, other reviewers weren't as kind. Soothing Soul Suckers describes the band as "hitting a speed bump"[3] while Metal Underground (describing it as "more depressing than it should be" and "Overly abstract headphone doom".)[4] and Brainwashed (Describing it as a "disappointing album" and "trying very hard to be Fushitsusha but failing miserably")[5] were not as kind. In a tenth anniversary observation, Doodlehound recommends a headphones listen for the album and the potential scientific concept behind it but ultimately gave a "mildly recommended" rating.[6]
