Chapter VI is the fifth studio album by the Swedish epic doom metal band Candlemass, named for being the sixth full-length release by the band, counting the live album released in 1990. Recorded and released three years after Tales of Creation, it would be the first studio album without recurring singer Messiah Marcolin and the only studio album featuring vocalist Thomas Vikström.
Background[]
Messiah Marcolin would leave Candlemass in 1990 following several disputes with the band, with Edling taking over with managing for the band. He would discover Thomas Vikström singing Judas Priest's "Painkiller" at a club and hire him on the spot to record the album.[1] Signing with Music For Nations, Chapter VI would see release on 25 May 1992, with "The Dying Illusion" and "Julie Laughs No More" as videos were made for both songs. The latter was banned by MTV for depicting simulated drug abuse and was subsequently never released. Notably the album did chart higher than the previous albums in Sweden (Peaking at #43 on the Swedish charts.[2]) and would be nominated for a Swedish Grammis but ultimately sold poorly compared to prior efforts, with Candlemass disbanding in 1994.
Chapter VI would see a reissue by GMR Music on 16 October 2006 with slightly different artwork, the Candlemass Sjunger Sigge Furst EP added to the end of the album, and a DVD of the band playing in Uddevalla in 1993, as well as liner notes by Leif Edling and a full re-master. In the years since it's release, Chapter VI has been re-visited with praise.[3][4][5]
