Centurions Ghost was a doom metal band based out of London, England. Named for a brand of ale from Yorkshire, Centurion's Ghost core sound would be based in doom metal but would draw from a wide range of influences such as Motorhead, Celtic Frost, Venom, Candlemass, Unleashed, Entombed, and Cathedral.[1] In a 2007 review, Kerrang Magazine would describe the band as the following: "If Motorhead had invented Doom Metal then this is what it would sound like!".[2]
The group formed when Australian beach bum James (vocals) driven by his love of British steel arrived in London and searched for like-minded individuals. Stumbling from one unwholesome watering hole to another he found, Rich (bass) ex of cult act Searing Orchard. Fuelled by their disgust at the current underground scene they set about forming a proper fucking metal band to show the wimps and posers how it should be done. They roped in Andrew Berycz on lead guitar, Milly (drums) ex of End Of Level Boss and Dan (guitar) who also decomposes his own brand of atmospheric film scores. Centurions Ghost had sealed their destiny.
Since this historical gathering the group have worked hard and got the notice they deserved leading to them being voted 3rd best unsigned band in the Terrorizer end of year poll 2003 and 2004. Musically they are a critic’s worst nightmare being heralded as a doom, black, death and power metal band. In fact they are a mixture of all of these, constructing songs that have an epic flow and overwhelming heaviosity. By the time of the release of A Sign of Things to Come in 2005, Centurion's Ghost began touring more frequently, sharing the stage with the likes of Reverend Bizarre, Orange Goblin, Earthride and The Gates of Slumber to scratch the surface. A follow-up in The Great Work would see release in 2007 leading to tours with Earthride and Converge. While the band was gaining momentum, their lineups were shifting drastically with Richard Whittaker the sole original member by 2009.
The band would record their third album in September 2009 and release Blessed & Cursed in Equal Measure in January 2010. To support the album, Centurions Ghost would tour Europe with Saint Vitus and perform a string of fall shows. Their last known gig was on 1 October 2010 in London.[3] Centurion's Ghost would disband in 2012.
