Causa Sui are a band based out of Odense, Denmark. Forming in 2005 following the disbandment of the post-rock band Limp, Causa Sui initially formed as a stoner rock band with vocalist Kasper Markus.[1][2] Following the release of 2007's Free Ride and Rasmus Elm Rasmussen joining, the band's sound would evolve into an instrumental psych band, shifting into more abstract, ambient styles akin to electric Miles Davis or Can, particularly on their 'Sessions' series of albums, which feature guest musicians. Other cited influences include Popul Vuh, The Allman Brothers Band, and Tame Impala.[3]
Despite a prolific output in a career spanning nearly twenty years, Causa Sui rarely perform live. Despite usually appearing exclusively at festivals, the band has also released two live albums among six official studio albums, six "sessions" albums and three extended plays. The band's name derives from the Latin name for a self-caused cause, one that is not the result of prior events.[4]
History[]
Causa Sui would be founded in 2004 by the quartet of Jess Kahr, Jakob Skøtt, Jonas Munk and Kasper Markus. Monk, Skøtt, Kahr and Rasmus Rasmussen had been previously been in a post-rock band known as Limp, later exploring sounds through three of the members' respective solo projects: Manual, Syntaks and Aerosol. Sometime after Causa Sui had formed the quartet would release the eponymous Causa Sui on 10 December 2005. Following appearances at Stoned From The Underground, ZXZW and SPOT Festival,[5] Causa Sui would release a follow-up in Free Ride via Elektrohasch Schallplatten in April 2007. Right around the time of release the band would make an appearance at Roadburn Festival.[6]
Kasper Markus would depart in 2008, before the band would perform a series of shows at Duna Jam.[7] Rasmus Rasmussen would soon join the band, reuniting the full Limp lineup under a different name. Without a singer, the band would embrace an all-instrumental sound and begin exploring new sound territories. Over the next few years the band would release three albums known as Summer Sessions, an improvisational series with guests. Three volumes of Pewt'r Sessions would follow with new label El Paraiso Records. The band would also release Euphorie Tide on 9 August 2013 with a release party the same day.[8]
Through the years the band would make marquee appearances at the likes of Festival of Endless Gratitude (2010, 2013), Roskilde (2012), Freak Valley Festival (2013, which also spawned a live album), DesertFest Berlin (2014), Copenhagen Psych Fest (2015), Desertfest Belgium (2015) and Keep it Low (2015)[9] among others.
Following the release of three extended plays, Causa Sui would release Return to Sky on 18 March 2016, supported by appearances at Stoned From The Underground, Lake on Fire Festival, Aarhus Psych Fest and Smoke The Fuzz Fest.[10] A fifth album in Vibraciones Doradas followed on 17 November 2017, surrounded by prior festival appearances and a 2018 appearance at SonicBlast Moledo. Taking some time off and recording during the 2020 pandemic, a sixth album in Szabodelico would see release on 13 November 2020.[11]
