The Curse of Candlemass: Live in Stockholm 2003 (2005) |
Candlemass (Also known as The White Album) is the eighth studio album by the Swedish Doom Metal band Candlemass. Recorded when the band would reunite in 2004, it would be the first and only album to feature vocalist Messiah Marcolin, whom previously appeared on 1989's Tales of Creation. Candlemass would be released circa May 2005 via Nuclear Blast Records to widespread critical acclaim, ultimately winning the Grammis award for "Best Hard Rock Album".[1]
Background[]
Candlemass would initially reunite with it's classic lineup in 2002 for a string of marquee shows, following up with more performances throughout 2004. In September 2003 it would be announced that Candlemass had recorded a demo and were seeking a record deal.[2] It would be revealed later on that Tony Martin (Black Sabbath) was considered for the vocal role at one point (With a demo of Martin performing "Witches" appearing on Doomology).[3] Recording would begin on the album in November 2004 for a two week session at Polar Studios in Stockholm,[4] with mixing taking place in January 2005.[5] On 19 January it would be announced that Candlemass had signed a worldwide deal with Nuclear Blast Records to release their eighth studio album.[6]
Candlemass would see release on 2 May 2005 on CD and double LP, with some versions featuring a bonus track. A music video for "Black Dwarf" would see release a few days later.[7] Candlemass would also notably chart in several countries, peaking at #96 on the German Albums Chart.[8] and #7 on the Swedish charts.[9] Candlemass would attain critical acclaim from numerous publications such as Blabbermouth (8.5/10),[10] Chronicles of Chaos (8.5/10),[11] Rock Hard Magazine (8.5/10)[12] and Pop Matters (8/10)[13] among others. Candlemass would be nominated for, and win, the Swedish Grammis award for "Best Hard Rock Album".[14]
Following the release of the album and extensive touring,[15] Candlemass would begin work on a new album by recording four songs with Andy Sneap.[16] The new album would have a tentative release for October 2006, however on 28 April 2006 it would be announced that vocalist Messiah Marcolin would be out of the band,[17] later revealed to be an acrimonious departure.[18][19][20][21][22] Robert Lowe would ultimately take over the vocal role leading up to the release of the following album in 2007's King of The Grey Islands.
