Brave Black Sea are a desert/stoner rock band based out of Palm Springs, California. Formed by members of members of Slo Burn along with Alfredo Hernández (Across The River, Yawning Man, Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, etc.) this quartet (later a quintet) would meld loud, heavy guitars with haunting melodies and danceable songs with a punk rock attitude. The band gravitates towards writing heavy, dynamic songs with a keen sense for catchy and memorable hooks and a sound that is a perfect blend of vintage and modern. To date the band has released a single album with a second album in the works,[1] all while performing largely in California and Europe.
History[]
Brave Black Sea would form in the summer of 2013 by Damon Garrison and Chris Hale, both of wwhom had played in the desert rock band Slo Burn from 1996 - 1997. Chris and Damon had been friends since 1991 with their earliest bands and upon re-connecting, would reach out to Alfredo Hernández, whom was briefly involved with Slo Burn before their abrupt disbandment. Rounding out the lineup would be Sons of Serro bassist Clint Cunningham.
The band had planned to make an E.P. to sell at shows but once a mutual friend of the band mentioned the project to the V2 label they were immediately offered a deal. Hale would convert his warehouse and wood shop into a recording studio to compose this debut album. Not long after the recordings Dylan Roche (Brant Bjork and The Bros) would take over the bass role.
Brave Black Sea would release their debut album Fragments circa 7 April 2014 in Europe. The first run sold out quickly and even with a second batch those would sell out. During it’s first week Visions Magazine called Fragments their “Album of the week”, while Classic Rock Magazine called it ‘Soulful, heavy and brilliantly played”. With records selling out and positive reviews Brave Black Sea would tour Europe that Summer, despite their UK shows being canceled. The band also made a marquee appearance at Stoned From The Underground. The next year the band would perform a handful of shows in the United States, supporting the likes of Nick Oliveri's Uncontrollable,[2] Three Days Grace,[3] Pennywise and Danzig.[4]
Brave Black Sea would go dormant largely due to Slo Burn's reunion tour in 2017 but would announce a second guitarist in Ryan Hendricks.[5] In late 2018 it would be announced that work would begin on a second album but no further posts have been indicated since.[6]
Bassist Dylan Roche would pass away on 30 August 2021.
