Bottom are a stoner metal/sludge metal band originating from New York City but since the 2000s has resided in San Francisco. Initially an all-girl power trio, the band would shift lineups in the mid-2000s, with guitarist and vocalist Sina as the core founding member. The band would be notable for their marathon tours early on in their career, performing dozens of shows all over the United States (and later Europe).[1][2]

The band would ultimately release four studio albums and an extended play.

History[]

Prior to moving to NYC to found Bottom, Sina was born in Chicago and had been playing music since the age of two, starting with the violin before leaning towards guitar. Landing in NYC's Lower East Side, Sina worked as a studio assistant for female activist/artist MaryBeth Edelson, Ralph Lauren, big advertising as well as played in the NYC Lower East Side bands Wanna, Racer17 and Spee-doe while also working as Studio Manager for The Rolling Stones Mobile (Loho Studios).

Bottom would be founded in NYC circa 1998 by Sina, Nila and Clementine. Bottom was a regular support act at CBGB's in the late 90's and sometime after forming, began solidifying themselves as a touring unit. Bottom's debut, Made in Voyage, was recorded in NYC, produced by Greg Gordon (Slayer, Helmet, and Public Enemy) and released in 1999 on the band's label Mudflap Records. Bottom’s “Made in Voyage” tour spanned from February 11 to December 24 in which the band played daily with a day of every 20-40 days. Bottom also played the six week summer Van’s Warped Tour in 2000 during the day, while simultaneously headlining their “Feels So Good When You’re Gone” club tour at night.[3]

Relocating to San Francisco and working with producer Billy Anderson at Sharkbite Studios, Feels So Good When You're Gone would see release via Man's Ruin Records on 29 May 2001, mere months before the label would fold. The album would be re-issued the next year by English label Rise Above Records, followed by the band's first tour of Europe, sharing the stage with the likes of Beaver and Sloth.[4]

The band would sign with Small Stone Records for their follow-up, recording and releasing their third album You'r Next in 2005. The band would largely perform in the West Coast around this time[5] the band wrote and recorded the album in three days in San Francisco, embarking on another marathon tour to support it. In 2006, Bottom had a line up change and Kevin Hardicus (bass) and Chris C (drums) joined the band as the new rhythm section.[6]

Kevin Swartz would join Bottom in 2011, having played drums with Archer, Burning Monk and Forgotten Gods. Bassist Nathan Taylor, formerly of the San Francisco-based My Last Day on Earth, would join in 2003. The band would put out two self-released works around this time: The EP MMXII in 2012 and the band's fourth album Hug Myself... All The Time in 2014, the latter produced by Billy Anderson.

The status of Bottom is currently unknown.
