Blue Dream is an American rock band from Chicago, Illinois. Formed in 2012 by drummer Danny Awisha, guitarist Anthony Cook, bassist Jimmy Russell, and guitarist/singer Justin Sanetra while they were attending the same High School.
After developing a local following in Chicago and the midwest they recorded a 5 track demo and self-booked a tour of the United States and Canada. In 2017, the band signed with the independent label Treehouse Records to release a 7" vinyl. Blue Dream released their first record, Volume Won, with the European label Kozmik Artifactz on January 19th, 2018 and quickly released their second record, Volume Blue, in the same year on September 21st.
"Blue Dream induces a "calm euphoria," a feeling of intensity that is delivered in a laid-back fashion. This isn't psych rock that wants you to stare at the wall and see shapes, but rather music that wants you to run around and tell people about aliens. It wants you to tune in and drop out just as much as Timothy Leary would have wanted yet still remains wrapped in an energetic noise rock exterior. The frantic pacing and distorted guitars echo bands like Sonic Youth, while some chord progressions, melodies, and the vocal style reflect classic rock bands like Deep Purple"[1].
"Neo-psych-mit-der-funky-grooves cuts chic enough to be urbane but fuzzed out enough to make the freakouts more than just a come on. Blue Dream reimagines grunge as more than just an influence from three popular bands and something that could genuinely move forward from the perspective of a new generation"[2].
They reference a few notable and audible influences in the form of Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, all of whom I can hear echoed, though not in a way that sounds like an outright rip off of any of those acts, more a passing homage in the way they create their own sound. There are also some elements of the Desert Rock icons such as Kyuss and Yawning Man[3].
"Listening to Volume Won, The Loch Ness Monster is called "The Battle of Cicero". For those who say they hate drum solos, I will remind you that it arose by derivation - extension of jazz forms. And what happens happens. Listening to this song and its protagonist, the great Danny Awisha, is the pleasure of the Olympian gods. Recorded live, on analogue and on tape, old-fashioned style (like the whole album), with a very special sound. And with the fierceness, speed, reflexes, sharpness, cunning, surprise, energy, technique, anger, strength, hatred, aptitude, attitude, quality and bad host typical of a sacred drummer from the 60s - 70s. He knocks you out of the chair, I swear. Worthy of Christian Vander, but in Stoner Psych context. An abundant wonder that I never tire of hearing. With the added seasoning of guitar effects out of this existential plane, and urban sounds of the fucking street. NOBODY does this today in their studio debut. Olé his balls. And John Bonham laughing proudly with his eternal cubata in hand"[4].
