Black Pussy were a psychedelic / stoner rock band from Portland, Oregon, USA. The band was founded in 2010 by members of White Orange and were active from then until roughly 2018. Bandleader Dustin Hill claims the name comes from his love of 1970’s culture, Soul Train, and Quentin Tarantino’s films. The name’s also inspired by the original name for The Rolling Stone’s song ‘Brown Sugar’, which was called ‘Black Pussy’ until the label made The Stones change it. The band also claimed the band was named as a reference to black cats.
The band garnered significant controversy over their name.[1][2][3] The band initially dismissed and embraced the controversy,[4][5][6] even going as far as to say they won't change the name. A petition would be made for the band to change the name.[7]
The band was also known for inflammatory reactions, in regards to the band name and in regards to mass shootings around the time.[8] Over time several shows would be canceled due to the name and further controversies.[9][10][11] Overall the band released three albums. Since 2018, the band had rebranded themselves as Black Magic Flower Power though the status of the band since then is largely unknown.[12]
