Biography[edit | edit source]

Modern metal music producer Billy Anderson

Anderson would start engineering as far back as the late 1980s, initially as an assistant and later producing albums through the 1990s for the likes of Sleep, Buzzov*en, Neurosis, Melvins and Brutal Truth just to name a few. Through the 1990s he engineered at Razor's Edge in San Francisco though often traveled to work as an engineer or producer for bands in other countries such as the English heavy metal band Orange Goblin or the Argentinian stoner rock band Los Natas. He would eventually relocate to Portland, Oregon.

Anderson has also performed with several bands in a career spanning over thirty years. The earliest known band Anderson would perform with would be a sludge/noise/punk band known as Spilth *!%, where he performed guitar and vocals with Jason Michaud, Dan Goss and Jon Donahue. Spilth toiled in the seedy SF underground for nearly a decade. In this time, they recorded one album and numerous singles and did a couple of tours. In 2009, Jason and Billy reunited in Los Angeles - older, wiser and ready to play again. Spilth was resurrected and reborn in November 2009, almost 10 years after their last show. Now featuring the vocals and bass of Benjamin Maurer (Gallows of Sedition) who was recruited in 2010, completing the current lineup.[1]

Anderson, along with engineering a handful of releases for the Melvins' (1991's Eggnog and Night Goat) along with playing two songs on bass ("Hag Me" and "Teet") on the band's seminal 1993 album Houdini, had also performed a handful of shows with the band, notably a NYC show at a Manhattan Sheraton hotel suite. He also appears in the documentary Colossus of Destiny: A Melvins Tale.

Anderson also collaborated with the likes of Tribes of Neurot (An experimental side project featuring all of the members of Neurosis) for 1998's Static Migration. He would contribute drums to the 2000 self-titled album by The Bobaloos, a project featuring Gregg Allman (The Allman Brothers Band) and Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath).

Anderson played bass and vocals in other bands such as The Rake and Blessing The Hogs, the latter being a more consistent act.[2] Blessing The Hogs would release three studio albums (2001's Blessing The Hogs, 2003's The Poisoning and 2005's The Twelve Gauge Solution. Blessing The Hogs would also contribute a cover of The Melvins' "Hog Leg" to the tribute album We Reach: The Music of The Melvins.

Anderson would join the experimental doom metal band known as Porn (Also Porn (The Men Of) as a contributor and collaborator with mastermind Tim Moss and Dale Crover (Nirvana, Melvins, Shrinebuilder).[3] Prior to the trio lineup forming Moss and Anderson worked together on a cover of Neil Young's "Out On The Weekend" for the 2002 compilation Sucking The 70s.[4] This trio lineup would release Wine, Women And Song... in 2004 to positive reviews and tour frequently with the Melvins. The same trio lineup, working with japanoise legend Merzbow, would collaborate together to release ...And The Devil Makes Three. on 8 September 2008.

In 2006 Anderson would be part of a collaborative project known as Solodolor, working with musicians in in the Argentinian rock and metal scenes such as Sergio Chotsourian (Los Natas, Ararat, Soldati), José Luis Armetta (Dragonauta, Eight Hands For Kali, etc.) and Gustavo Rowek (V8, Rata Blanca, Nativo, Ian, Rowek). The band formed in 2006 and recorded a host of material between 2006 and 2007 while Los Natas was recording their sixth album El hombre montaña. The band's output would be three songs, released twice in split releases with Los Natas circa 2008 and 2010. While the band was largely a studio side project the band did manage to perform live with Los Natas circa November 2010.[5]

In 2011 Anderson would join the sludge metal ensemble known as Trilobite, releasing Delusions of Grandeur on 30 August 2011.[6]

Anderson also would work run live sound for various bands, notably the Portland, Oregon metal band Agalloch, whom Anderson would engineer several releases for.
