Begotten is a doom metal band from New York City. Active in their initial stint from 1997 to roughly 2002 the band's only studio album was notable for being the final release on Man's Ruin Records, released literally weeks before the label closed it's doors. The band has become active once again. the name of the band shares a title with the 1990 film of the same name directed by E. Elias Merhige.
History[]
Begotten formed sometime in 1997 in NYC as a power trio, performing shows in the NYC area and sharing the stage with the likes of Electric Wizard and Bad Wizard among others in their initial run. Recording and producing with Anthony Esposito the band released their self-titled album on 21 July 2001 via Man's Ruin Records, proving to be the label's final release before the iconic stoner label went defunct. Aside from releasing a cover of Godflesh's "Life Is Easy" on the tribute album Godflesh: Tribute (via Nihilistic Holocaust) in 2003 the band's activity largely ceased, largely due to Anselmo developing throat cancer and Amanda Topaz suffering major hearing loss.
On 19 October 2016 two unreleased tracks ("Apache" and "Nomad") would be published on a Soundcloud page for free listening, the first known activity of Begotten in over a decade.[1] Notably, Begotten had reformed and started jamming again.
The band would play their first shows as a reformed band in 2017. The first show would be in support of Eternal Black in their album release and Reign of Zaius at Arlene's Grocery on 5 August 2017.[2] The band's second show is in support of Shroud Eater at Saint Vitus Bar on 5 September.[3] On 24 November 2018 Begotten would release Begotten 2018 Demo EP, their first recordings in over fifteen years.[4]
The band would follow up with a new single in Firewater circa February 2020, followed by a two-song EP the next March.
