Battalions are a sludge metal band based out of Hull.[1] Forming in 2010, this quartet would compose what they would describe as "heavy rock with extreme vocals". Building themselves up in the UK scene, the band has released three studio albums to date and are currently signed to APF Records.

History[]

Battalions would form in 2010 the founding lineup of Phil Wilkinson, Pete Cross, Matt Dennett and Matt Walker. The band would perform occasional shows in their beginnings alongside the likes of Lazarus Blackstar,[2] Dopefight, Conan and Cough[3] among others. However Dennett would not stay with the band for long and guitarist Pete Cross would switch to bass. Working with engineer and session guitarist Half Deaf Clatch, Battalions would release their debut EP Warnings Have Been Issued on 11 July 2012.

Battalions would perform sporadic shows, eventually recruiting a new guitarist in Mark Wood. With Matt Dennett returning on bass and Pete Cross returning to bassist, the band would briefly become a quintet. This lineup would record with Chris Fielding at Skyhammer Studio, working on a debut album. Nothing To Lose would see release on 21 January 2016, gaining positive reception. This same lineup would quickly begin work on a follow-up, returning to SKyhammer Studio in February 2017. Moonburn would see release on 5 August 2017 to further critical praise.[4][5][6]

Gaining momentum, work on a third album would quickly follow albeit as a quartet as Mark Wood would leave the band. Following appearances at the likes of APF Records Showcase and The Sophie Lancaster Festival[7] among other events, along with signing with the Manchester label. Forever Marching Backwards would see release on 30 November 2018 to positive reviews.[8][9][10]

Founding member Matt Walker would be fired from the band in 2020 after being arrested and convicted for sexual assault. Simon Harrison would over the drum role sometime after. The band would perform sporadic gigs in 2021, with a new album in the works.[11] Ultimately, King of a Dead World would see release via APF Records on 21 October 2022.
