Attention Please is a studio album by the Japanese experimental band Boris. The album was released on 24 May 2011, through the label Sargent House. Its original release date was 26 April but this was pushed back. Notably, Attention Please would be the first (and to date, only) Boris album to feature Wata on lead vocals for every song (With exception to the instrumental "Aileron").[1] Attention Please notably expands on the dream pop and electronic sound of New Album, while adding elements of alternative rock and shoegaze.
Background[]
Work would begin on Heavy Rocks in 2009 through 2010. Signing with Sargent House in early 2011, Boris would announce three albums, the first being New Album and then Attention Please and Heavy Rocks.[2] On 25 February the label released the track "Hope" as the only single from the album.[3] On 16 May NPR Music streamed Attention Please in its entirety.[4] Notably of the three albums, all versions of Attention Please are the same regardless of label or format.
The album was released on the same day and label as Heavy Rocks, with which it shares the song title "Aileron."[5] The album features the tracks "Party Boy", "Hope", Les Paul Custom '86" and "Spoon" from New Album in altered forms.[6] "Party Boy" and "Les Paul Custom '86" additionally have third versions on the Japanese New Album vinyl release. A version of "Tokyo Wonder Land" was previously released on the Golden Dance Classics split release with 9dw. Initial track list information included "16:47:52" (previously available on Japanese Heavy Rock Hits) as track 6, but the official preorder revealed it is replaced by "You."[7]
Attention Please was met with generally favorable reviews and the most positive critical reception of the three Boris albums released in 2011. Pitchfork would score the album a 7.1/10, stating "Her [Wata] consistent presence offers an atmosphere of patience, plus a cohesiveness that Boris have long since foregone. Sure, she leads the band through several different looks, from the tense, pretty opening title track to the dance-metal anthem "Party Boy". During "See You Next Week", she drifts like a ghost between a world of broken drum machines and guitars meant more for texture than melody."[8] Consequence of Sound would award a "B" score, eliciting comparisons to Portishead and Massive Attack.[9] No Rip Cord would also notably award the album a 9/10 score.[10]
