Ataraxie is a doom/death metal band from Rouen, Normandy, France formed at the end of 2000. Their music has early 1990s doom/death metal roots, mixed up with doom metal elements, and old school death metal elements. The lyrics are part English, part French. Their album Slow Transcending Agony is considered to be a milestone in the history of early 2000s doom/death metal.
The band's name in French means "Ataraxia", a word used by ancient Greeks to describe the freedom from worry or any other preoccupation. To both Stoics and Epicureans, it was the only true happiness possible.
