Asia is a studio album by the Japanese experimental band Boris. It was first announced via the band's Facebook page on 30 April,[1] along with simultaneous releases of Urban Dance and Warpath as part of the New Noise Literacy series.[2] They were first available on tour with Endon, making their release date May 2.[3]
Of the three simultaneous releases, Asia is almost entirely noise experimentation, with elements of drone music as well. Asia is entirely instrumental, all in keeping with the styles used on it's surrounding works, as well as previous drone albums like The Thing Which Solomon Overlooked.
The cover art posted by the band is inaccurate to the physical product, which features a young Japanese girl dressed as a ballerina.[4] Ultimately, Urban Dance was limited to 1000 CD copies and only sold as shows and via Inoxia Records.
Because of the release's niche nature, reviews of Asia are scarce and mixed. A review for Monochrome Heaven would score the album an 8/10, stating "For as smothering and merciless as it is, Asia is anything but depressing. It succeeds at conveying all types of emotion, some of them disturbing but some are cathartic and others even beautiful.".[5] A review on Metal Archives would score the album 20% and while a bit more lenient to "Terracotta Warrior", would be critical of the harsh noise throughout.[6] In a ranked review, Doodlehound would note that "Ant Hill" is "far too weird to dismiss" and describe it as "ten minutes of freakish high-pitched sounds that actually slips into weird rhythms beyond what resembles a fax machine going off the rails.". He would praise "Terracotta Warrior", stating "Of the songs presented in this trilogy this may be the finest and definitely most imaginative of the experimental noise bunch."[7]
