As Heaven Turns To Ash... is the only full-length album by the Worchester, Massachusetts doom metal band Warhorse, recorded in 2000 and released in 2001 via Southern Lord Records in what would be the label's ninth release. Described at the time as "Apocalyptic Stoner Doom",[1] As Heaven Turns To Ash... at the time of release it attained positive reviews and has attained a cult following among doom metal albums.
Background[]
Following the release of two EPs in Lysergic Communion and The Priestess, Warhorse would begin work on a full-length album with the trio of Orne, Hubbard and Laskowski. Recording would take place at New Alliance Studios in Boston with producer Andrew Schneider while mastering would take place at Malignant Sound Technologies in Tucson, Arizona.
In the fall of 2000 Southern Lord would announce Warhorse's upcoming full-length, describing the album as "the heaviest fucking band on the planet!" and an album that "makes Sleep and Electric Wizard sound like the Beatles!!!".[2]
As Heaven Turns To Ash... was released on 15 January 2001[3] to positive reception from several publications such as Stonerrock.com, Metal Maniacs, Chronicles of Chaos and Stoner Rock Rules!.[4] To support the album Warhorse would tour North America with Electric Wizard in the tour Apocalypse Now, followed by a tour of Europe later that year.
In the years since it's release, well after Warhorse disbanded, As Heaven Turns To Ash... has attained a cult following, with retroactive reviews eliciting high praise, especially around the time of it's 2015 reissue. Scene Point Blank,[5] Ghost Cult Magazine,[6] The Obelisk,[7] Sputnik Music,[8] The Sludgelord[9] and Metal Observer[10] are just a few whom have praised this album retroactively.
In January 2015, nearly fifteen years after it's release, Southern Lord Records would re-issue As Heaven Turns To Ash... with the I Am Dying EP as bonus tracks and a full re-master. This would be a vinyl re-issue in Black and Gold.[11]
