Archive I (Initially known as Scott Slimm Presents: Boris Archive) is a three-disc live compilation of various live recordings of Japanese experimental band Boris, detailing the band's live sound in their early years with a handful of unique performances for their respective time. Archive I initially was a rarity among Boris collectors and garnered a heavy amount (Up to $300 USD) on the secondary market around the time of release after it quickly sold out.
Background[]
Over a period of the early 2000s, Scott Slimm worked in collaboration with Boris to release a live album depicting the early years of the band and after sifting through dozens of recordings, narrowed it down to a three-disc set.
Volume 1: Live 96 - 98 collects a host of recordings from 1996 - 1998 in the band's earlier, more abrasive years. Most of the material shown here appear in studio form on Amplifier Worship, Barebones / Boris and other releases. "Mosquito" was misspelled as "Mosquite" and "Vacuumm" was misspelled as "Vacuum" on the release. The live recording details on disc one are as follows:
- 1-1 to 1-2 recorded 21 December 1996 at Koenji 20000V
- 1-3 to 1-5 recorded 21 June 1996 at Koenji 20000V
- 1-6 to 1-7 recorded 10 April 1997 at Shinjuku Loft
- 1-8 recorded 2 August 1998 at Koenji 20000V
Volume 2: Drumless Shows details portions of two unique shows to the band at the time and at the time the only case of the band doing drumless performances. "Vomitself" is spelled as "Vomit Yourself" on this release.
- 2-1 recorded 1997/08/09 at Nagoya Music Farm
- 2-2 to 2-3 recorded 1997/08/08 at Koenji 20000V
Volume 3: Two Long Songs showcases a special performance at Koenji 20000V on 3 May 2001 as the band performed abridged versions of Absolutego and Flood.
Altogether, 600 copies of each disc were pressed with the intention of being sold individually. However, due to strong demand for all three, a set consisting of an obi-style horizontal slipcase enclosing the three discs was created and limited to 320 copies.
On 5 March 2014, Archive would be reissued as Archive I on Daymare Recordings with a companion 3-disc live release in Archive II.
