Ararat is an experimental project from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Starting in 2008 as a solo outlet for Sergio Chotsourian, it would later evolve into a proper band for a few years. Though a great deal of the music comprises long instrumental tracks, there are also shorter songs with vocals.
History[]
Ararat was founded in 2008 by Sergio Chotsourian (Los Natas, Santoro, Soldati), initially as a solo project. Working with his brother Santiago and session bassist Nicolás Mallo, Chotsourian would record the first album and quickly sign to MeteorCity Records. Música de la Resistencia was released on 9 September 2009 to positive reviews among the stoner scene.
In 2010, Sergio would recruit veteran drummer Alfredo Felitte (Taura, Buffalo, Banda de la Muerte) to conceive a full band for live performances and record a second album. Ararat II was released on CD via Oui Oui records in 2011 and on vinyl via Elektrohasch Schallplatten the next year. Tito Fargo (Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota, Gran Martell) joined the project in 2011 as a guest live guitar/synth player. After some touring, Tito was chosen as a full member and eventually producer of their next album.
Performing sporadically between 2011 - 2013, Ararat would begin working on their third record. On 5 March 2014, Cabalgata hacia la Luz was released via Oui Oui Records. After heavingly supporting the album and touring between 2014 - 2016, the band would take a break, returning as a duo (Chotsourian/Felitte) for a small run of shows in 2018.
Sergio Chotsourian has publicly stated that Ararat is more of his own project than a band, with constant change being the only certainty. Therefore, he continues as the sole performer recording music under this banner, featuring guest musicians on each release.
In 2022 Ararat released a fourth album, Volumen 4, recorded as a duo with Jorge Araujo on drums. A year later Sergio would record and release the next album: La Rendición del Hombre, this time featuring violin by Federico Terranova and no drums whatsoever. A new song, 02Kid, was released as a single in 2024, with Gastón Gullo on drums.
