Anniversary (2011) |
A New Ice Age (2011) |
Anniversary is the first (and only) official live album by the English doom metal band Cathedral. Recorded for the band's 20th anniversary, Anniversary would be released initially as a double-CD set in the fall of 2011, with vinyl editions to follow in 2020. Anniversary would also be the first Cathedral release coming back to Rise Above Records, though Metal Blade Records would handle the North American distribution.
Background[]
The band would tour the UK and Ireland with The Gates of Slumber and Church of Misery and later Europe (Again with The Gates of Slumber) as a whole that year. On 3 December 2010, Cathedral would perform a 20th Anniversary show with two sets: A set performing Forest of Equilibrium in it's entirety with it's original recording lineup and a second set with the current lineup performing a career-spanning set.[1] It would also notably be the band's last live show with Leo Smee as Scott Carlson would join Cathedral for their farewell tour the next year.
Notably, the second disc features a song entitled "The Last Spire", which would be the name of the band's final album. However, no song on the record has a title track. In an interview with BraveWords, Lee Dorrian would explain the track: "My initial idea for the album...We didn't really have many songs written back then; we had just started thinking about the next album...I already knew that's what the title was going to be for the last album. I thought it would be good to give people some indication of how it would start, just leave a bit of a teaser I suppose...even though when we recorded the Anniversary record, we hadn't announced or decided it was going to be the last ever tour. It was just something I had in my head 'cause I wanted this last album to be the heaviest we could make it really, without being stupid you know. I wanted to make sure everyone else in the band knew that."[2]
Anniversary was released as a limited edition boxed set in deluxe packaging including 2 x mini-LP sized gatefold jackets with exclusive Dave Patchett artwork, a replica of the event poster and a 40-page booklet containing many behind the scenes photos from the event. In 2020 Cathedral would release each disc as a 2LP set.
