Adrift is the second solo album and first acoustic album by Wino. Recorded at Ambient Studios with Ray Tilkens, Adrift would be released by German label Exile on Mainstream in the fall of 2010. A US vinyl edition would see release in 2011 via Volcom Entertainment.
Background[]
Following the touring cycle for Punctuated Equilibrium, Wino would begin recording a second solo album with Ray Tilkens, a Maryland-based guitarist whom Wino harbored a friendship with for years and speaks extensively on in the liner notes for the album.[1]
In an interview with Metal Temple, Wino would explain the acoustic idea stemmed from an on-the-spot set put on by Jon Blank and other friends encouraging the idea prior to recording:
“ | “It’s kind of a weird story It after the recording of “Punctuated Equilibrium”. And I’m talking about Jon Blank. He was a great guy. Nobody really knew who he was, but he was a great player and it was like magic when we recorded the alum. I knew that Jon had some drug issues, and so did I, but during the recordings of “Punctuated Equilibrium” and after them we were fine, but when we got on tour we were fucked up again, but I wasn’t at the same drugs that he was into, so we cleaned up and did a small tour for ten days before having four days off to start a big tour, six weeks, supporting CLUTCH. And the first day we went home Jon died and it was really hard for me.
But before that, in the release party that we had, a friend of mine who has a motorcycle magazine and wanted me with one of my motorcycles on the cover, has a poster saying "Wino will do a small acoustic set at the end of the party". He didn’t ask me to do that (laughs)! And even though I was like “What the fuck dude?” I did it and it was really bad (laughs). So I told myself that if I’m going to do that, I’m going to do it right. So I wrote some acoustic songs with my guitar… And after Jon died that friend of mine told me to jump on the bus and do the rest of the tour acoustic. So I did it. And it turned out good, the people enjoyed it So I decided to go for it, even though I had a proposition four years ago. I know that everyone is doing it nowadays, but for me it’s a challenge.” |

Adrift would be released on 24 September 2010. Exile on Mainstream would release the album on vinyl and CD. A tour edition had the CD housed in a custom, laser-etched cigar box.[3] "D-Bear" is dedicated to Scott Kelly.
Adrift would attain praise by several publications such as The Sleeping Shaman,[4] The Line of Best Fit,[5] Invisible Oranges[6] and The Obelisk[7] among others. Wino would tour Europe that year beginning with an appearance at South of Mainstream Festival.[8] Notably he would tour with German singer-songwriter Conny Ochs, later collaborating with him. The next year would begin with a show on 15 January 2011 at the Volcom store in Los Angeles to support the American release of Adrift, followed by an acoustic tour with Scott Kelly.[9][10]
