Acid Mothers Temple (In all of it's incarnations) is a Japanese psychedelic band (Also considered a soul collective and freak-out band), the core of which formed in 1995 as Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O.. The band was created by guitarist Kawabata Makoto after the hiatus of Mainliner and early in their career featured many musicians, but by 2004 the line-up had drastically changed. The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. broke up briefly while Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno formed with a harder, heavier psych-rock sound until the former group re-formed with different vocalists and various guests in 2006. Many more side bands and projects under the Acid Mothers Temple name have formed throughout the years with other iterations and variations on psychedelic but all bands are considered a part of Acid Mothers Temple according to Kawabata Makoto.

The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. alone has over forty studio albums while the other incarnations all have at least one other studio effort under their belt. Acid Mothers Temple have been releasing studio and live releases along with touring relentlessly since 1995 whether through labels like PSF and Important or through their own Acid Mothers Temple imprint.

The band consider themselves as a collective as many musicians have come to collaborate with the outfit over their lengthy existence such as Kinski, Guru Guru, Gong and Yoshida Tatsuya of Ruins to scratch the surface. Their music is typically themed around open psychedelia, song parodies, comedy, sex and professional wrestling.

History

(1995 - 1999)

Kawabata Makoto formed his soul collective (Then known as Acid Mother's Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. in 1995 with Higashi Hiroshi, Hajime Koizumi, Suhara Keizou, Mano Kazuhiko and Cotton Casino among the founding members in live and studio though many folk would stop to briefly join this soul collective. Performing shows around Japan the band released a demo in 1996 limited to ten copies before dropping the apostrophe. Having recorded a host of material between 1995 and 1997 the band followed with two more self-titled demo cassettes before releasing their debut album Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. on 25 November 1997 via P.S.F. Records. The album was selected as one of the 50 best albums of the year by the British music magazine, The Wire. The band also followed with a second demo entitled Freak Out in support of their earliest known tour of the United States in 1998 (An appearance in San Fransisco)..

With more frequent touring under their belt and a personal label conceived in 1998 the band released their second and third respective albums in 1999 in Pataphysical Freak Out MU!! and a concept/fake soundtrack album in Wild Gals A-Go-Go. Both of these albums featured a new bassist under the name of Tsuyama Atsushi, also known as the Cosmic Joker.

In June 1998, the band played their first live gig in San Francisco, as part of a tour of America and Europe. In the UK, they headlined a bill which include The Pastels and Richard Youngs at the Psychedelic Trip Festival at the Glasgow School of Art. In Berlin, they collaborated with the NASA computer graphics animation team. during the tour the group also recorded live radio sessions for KFJC in San Francisco and XFM in London.

In November 1998, they toured Japan with Leningrad Blues Machine (led by Zeni Geva guitarist, Tabata). Tsuyama Atsushi took part in this tour as a guitarist.

From April to June the group toured America and Europe. From this tour, Tsuyama Atsushi joined the group on bass. This completed the current live line-up of the group. In this tour, they headlined the Deep Heaven Festival in Boston, but due to the massive volume the police were called and the festival was forcibly closed down. The group headlined at the first day of the F*te de l'Humanit* in Toulouse, France. Radio sessions were recorded for KFJC in San Francisco and WFMU in New York. A tour of Japan followed in September that year.

(2000 - 2004)

Acid Mothers Temple began the year by releasing a live double album entitled Live in Occident, documenting their 1999 tour of the United States and Europe. In April,the group played their first gig in seven months, headlining at the Psychedelic Festival in Osaka. The line-up was the same as last year's touring unit with Zoffy also performing. The band also released a 12" of their cover of the Occitan traditional song La Novia on Eclipse Records that October along with what they considered their third album Troubadours From Another Heavenly World and a mostly sold out world tour to follow.

2001 began with the release of double LP Absolutely Freak Out (Zap Your Mind!) and what was considered their fourth album New Geocentric World of Acid Mothers Temple. In what was their first Japanese gig in a year saw new drummer Ichiraku Yoshimitsu in the fold. A commemorative tour EP entitled Master of the Universe was composed as the band toured the UK and Ireland in a completely sold out tour in May. The band would follow with a tour of the US in September but their headlining spot at CMJ Music Marathon was canceled due to the September 11th attacks. However both performances in Chicago (At Reckless Records and WNUR Radio) were eventually released as The Day Before The Sky Fell In and The Day Before The Night Fell In respectively. Tours with Circle and Kinski followed in the UK and Japan, the latter featuring a double-drum lineup of Yoshimitsu and Hajime. The band would also release an album with their version of Terry Riley's In C.

2002 would prove to be one of the most productive years for Acid Mothers Temple, seeing release of four different studio albums, two EPs and five live albums sold on a massive world tour. French filmmaker Audrey Ginestet joined the band and filmed them throughout their 2002 USA tour with an eventual release of the tour diary as Dokonan. The soul collective had also hosted its own yearly festival in Japan that same year, appropriately titled Acid Mothers Festival, which has been attended by Yamazaki Maso of Masonna, Afrirampo, Yoshida Tatsuya, Mani Neumeier, Kuriyama Jun, Ohpia, and Seiichi Yamamoto of Boredoms. 2003 saw the beginnings of a new group, initially known as Acid Mothers Mode HHH but now known as Acid Mothers Temple SWR featuring Yoshida Tatsuya of Ruins. While members of the group toured Europe with the Japanese New Music Festival 2003 would mark the first year of touring for Acid Mothers Temple SWR. 2003 also saw the beginnings of a collaboration with French psychedelic group Gong as Acid Mothers Gong. Two split albums saw release this year and Acid Mothers Gong made their first live appearance in October 2003 at Royal Festival Hall in London.

2004 marked the beginnings of new projects with Acid Mothers Temple along with the end of an era. On 26 March 2004 Acid Mothers Temple performed a last minute set at All Tomorrows Parties UK. Notably this was the final performance at the time of longtime vocalist Cotton Casino, who left the band to move to the United States and focus on raising a family. The band soldiered on with a tour with Acid Mothers Gong and two Melting Paraiso tours, along with releasing seven studio albums (One with Acid Mothers Gong, six with the Melting Paraiso UFO, one of which was a four disc album spanning four hours!). The lineup by the end of 2004 before the Melting Paraiso UFO took a short hiatus was Makoto, Hiroshi, Atsushi and Hajime.

(2005 - 2009)

On 11 February 2005 it was announced in celebration of the tenth anniversary that a new incarnation of Acid Mothers Temple was born: Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno, featuring Makoto, Hiroshi, Tabata Mitsuru (Zeni Geva, Leningrad Blues Machine and founding member of Boredoms) and the double-drum attack of Shimura Koji (High Rise, Mainliner, White Heaven) and Okano Futoshi (Ghost, Subvert Blaze). The band would release five studio albums under this moniker and form a world tour around this lineup. This also came with the debut studio album SWR by Acid Mothers SWR and a collaborative album entitled We Are Acid Mothers Afrirampo. The band would close the year with the Acid Mothers Temple Festival as the Melting Paraiso UFO alongside Ruins and Afrirampo.

2006 would see the return of Acid Mothers Temple to the live stage alongside new female vocalist Nao. Two albums in Have You Seen the Other Side of the Sky? and Myth of the Love Electrique would see release along with a world tour in between the Japanese New Music Festival with Acid Mothers Temple SWR, a tour with Acid Mothers Gong and another tour with The Cosmic Inferno, including a new album entitled Starless & Bible Black Sabbath. On the UFO's end in 2007 saw a new though short-lived vocalist in Kitagawa Hao who performed on four new studio albums along with new albums by SWR (Stones, Women & Records) and The Cosmic Inferno (Ominous From the Cosmic Inferno). A re-release of 41st Century Splendid Man also saw release via Essence Records. Shimura Koji from the Cosmic Inferno also joined on as a full-time drummer to the Melting Paraiso UFO as both groups toured throughout 2007. The year would close with a vinyl re-release of the group's earliest demos as The Early Acid Mothers Temple Recordings 1995–1997 and an Acid Mothers Guru Guru show towards the end of the year.

2008 would see three brand new albums now as a quartet again, notably Recurring Dream and Apocalypse of Darkness which was more in lines to drone-doom and one of their heaviest releases showcasing two 36-minute songs. The Cosmic Inferno would also see two new albums along with new drummer Pika from Afrirampo in the fold. The biggest footnote of 2008 among the studio releases and touring however was Never Ending Space Ritual, a double-DVD live retrospective capturing live incarnations of Acid Mothers Temple from the early years to 2008 along with live footage of all known versions of the group and special live clips (Such as Rosina de Piera performing "La Novia" with the band.). 2009 would see four more Melting Paraiso UFO albums, among them the humorous Are We Experimental? and the dark heaviness of Dark Side of the Black Moon: What Planet Are We On?. The Melting Maraiso UFO would tour but also live performances came from Acid Mothers Kaidan (A collaboration with Hijokaidan) and Acid Mothers Temple SWR.

(2010 - 2015)

On 14 May 2010 at Club Goodman the Battle of Acid Mothers Temple was held, featuring SWR, The Cosmic Inferno, The Melting Paraiso UFO and the Melting Cosmic Blues Band. The majority of touring would involve SWR but the Melting Paraiso UFO would tour towards the end of the year. The band would release only one album this year in In O To ∞, a continuation on the In C release from some years back. Notably this album would feature Cotton Casino on an AMT release for the first time since 2004.

2011 would see one new album from The Cosmic Inferno and two albums from the Melting Paraiso UFO, notably Pink Lady Lemonade (You're From Inner Space) along with their relentless cycle of touring. 2012 would notably see the band become a quintet again with Mitsuru Tabata joining along as a second guitarist and vocalist. Two albums would come in the form of Son of a Bitches Brew and the Melting Paraiso's take on Gong's Master Builder (The Cosmic Inferno did an IAO Chant in 2005): IAO Chant from the Melting Paraiso Underground Freak Out. 2013 brought one album In Search For The Lost Divine Arc as the group toured North America and Europe in support of it. Notably a new incarnation of Acid Mothers Temple named Acid Mothers Temple & Space Paranoid formed at the request of their Spanish booking agent who wanted to see them perform Black Sabbath tunes. This also led to their only studio album Black Magic Satori the same year. Notably, The Cosmic Inferno released Doobie Wonderland in 2013, their last studio album to date.

In 2014 Shimura Koji would retire from the group and Satoshima Nani would serve as his replacement, leading to this current lineup performing a world tour in support of Astrorgasm from the Inner Space. However the departures would not end as longtime bassist/vocalist Tsuyama Atsushi would announce his departure from the group at the end of 2016, ceasing live and studio activity with The Melting Paraiso UFO (Though he would remain active with Acid Mothers Temple SWR). His final performance with the Melting Paraiso UFO was at the Acid Mothers Temple Festival on 12 December 2015 and was released the next year as Last Concert of the First Chapter.

(2016 - Present)

In January 2016 it was announced that Takashi Uchida, better known as S/T (For "Space & Time") would become the new bassist, sharing vocal duties with Mitsuru Tabata, though he does not perform on the band's 2016 album Wake to a New Dawn of Another Astro Era . The quintet continued on with a world tour in support of the new record. A new record entitled Those Who Came Never Before also spawned the next year featuring S/T (Now known as Wolf), Cotton Casino and a live Kawabata Makoto recording from 1984 interpolated into brand new recordings.

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O.

The most prolific and widely known of the various Acid Mothers Temple collectives, Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. is a 5-piece that plays mostly psychedelic, space-rock type music. Their pieces are often improvised, free-form or experimental, while incorporating elements of American psych rock, drone and world music. They are considered the core collective band with an endless host of rotating collaborators and guests.

Acid Mothers Temple & the Cosmic Inferno

Acid Mothers Temple & the Cosmic Inferno differs from the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. not only in line-up but also in style of music. The Cosmic Inferno generally plays much heavier, hard-rock inspired psychedelia, and experiments more with effects pedals. They were initially formed in 2004 when The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. fell apart but members of the group joined The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. when the band re-formed, also working under this outfit though more sporadically in later years. The band tended to incorporate a double-drum lineup.

Acid Mothers Temple SWR

This band was also known as Acid Mothers Temple mode HHH and Seikazoku. It's largely a free-jazz collaboration between Makoto, Tsuyama and Ruins mastermind Yoshida Tatsuya. This incarnation is still active as of 2017 and regularly performs on European tours as part of the Japanese New Music Festival.

Acid Mothers Afrirampo is essentially the core three members of Acid Mothers Temple plus the two members of Afrirampo. Acid Mothers Afrirampo's music is closer to free jazz with experimental elements. There is also a strong focus on the drums.

The Pink Ladies Blues is another Acid Mothers Temple side-project, notable largely because it does not include Kawabata Makoto (And to date the only project as such). In fact, that trio is led by Magic Aum Gigi, who was a member of Acid Mothers Temple in 2002. Their music is traditional blues and psychedelic. It is not known if this incarnation is still active in any capacity.
