ACID MAMMOTH[]

Acid Mammoth 2023

History[]

Acid Mammoth (2015-2017)[]

Acid Mammoth is a doom metal band from Athens, Greece. The band was formed in 2015 by Chris Babalis Jr. (Vocals & Guitars) and Dimosthenis Varikos (Bass), good friends since high school, with a deep love for Sabbath and other heavy music. After a series of jams and recordings, they were joined by their very good friend Marios Louvaris (Drums) and Chris Babalis Sr. (Guitars), Jr.'s father.

In late 2016, the band recorded its self-titled, debut full-length album, which they self-released digitally in autumn of 2017. The album was mixed and mastered by Dionysis Dimitrakos of Descent Studios in Athens while drums were recorded at Wudsound Studios. The album art was designed by popular Greek comic artist Yiannis "Rubus" Rubulias. The album was released digitally on Bandcamp on October 6th, 2017.

Under Acid Hoof (2018-2020)[]

With the debut album well received by the Stoner/Doom community, it wasn’t long before the band was in the studio again to record its second full-length album “Under Acid Hoof”. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered with Dionysis Dimitrakos of Descent Studios, while Drums were recorded at Dope of Sound Studios. This time the band invested a lot of time during all phases of the album's production to create the best album possible. The album art was designed by Branca Studio.

"Our plan since the conception of Under Acid Hoof as an idea has been to create an album of the utmost heaviness that would surpass its predecessor in every way possible"

-Chris Babalis Jr., Interview with It's Psychedelic Baby Magazine (Feb 29, 2020)

In September 2019, the band signed with Heavy Psych Sounds Records . Heavy Psych Sounds welcomed Acid Mammoth to their roster from the very first listen of "Under Acid Hoof". The album was released in January 24th 2020 in Vinyl (Red, Gold, Black) and CD (Digipak).

Under Acid Hoof scored no.2 in the January 2020 edition of Doom Charts and received great reviews from the likes of The Obelisk , The Sludgelord , Metal Hammer Greece and Outlaws of the Sun .

  • The Obelisk“Acid Mammoth lead with riffs, worship volume, and plunder like slow-motion churning madmen.”

  • The Sludgelord“They establish themselves as a band that will help to define the genre in the future.“

  • Outlaws Of The Sun“This is a powerful and addictive experience that demands your full undivided attention.”

  • Heavy Blog Is Heavy“Be one of the people who can confidently say, “I’ve been listening to them since Under Acid Hoof”.

“Under Acid Hoof without a doubt surpasses its predecessor in every way from a creative standpoint as well as production-wise, and we are really proud of the final product. We are also very excited and honored to be a part of the great Heavy Psych Sounds Records roster; it’s a dream come true. The response to the album up until now has been really positive, and we are grateful to all those who have supported us so far.”

-Chris Babalis Jr., Interview with New Noise Magazine  (Jan 23, 2020)

Doom Sessions Vol. 2 (2020)[]

2020 was a very busy year for Acid Mammoth. Despite releasing an album in January, the band continued its cooperation with Heavy Psych Sounds, releasing a Split with Italian Doomers 1782.

Heavy Psych Sounds Records announced a series of split albums called "Doom Sessions". Heavy compilations with doom bands from the label's roster. The first volume of "Doom Sessions" featured Conan and Deadsmoke, and it was followed by 1782/Acid Mammoth's opus, Vol.2. The split was released September 18th 2020, featuring three tracks from each band.

The Acid Mammoth songs were composed during the Covid quarantine in Athens, and they were mixed and mastered at Descent Studios by Dionysis Dimitrakos. Drums were recorded at Ritual Studios.

"The three songs of the Acid Mammoth side were composed during the covid-19 quarantine and they were recorded in late spring – early summer..." "...We would like to think that they are like a gateway between Under Acid Hoof and our next full-length album. In the middle, like an aftermath of Under Acid Hoof or the “herald” of the next album. The three songs of Doom Sessions Vol. 2 are comprised of elements from both our two full-length albums. They have the witchy atmosphere of the debut combined with the aggressive fuzzy heaviness of Under Acid Hoof."

-Chris Babalis Jr., Interview with No Clean Singing (Sept 16, 2020)

The three songs featured on the Acid Mammoth side, "Black Wedding", "Sleepless Malice" and "Cosmic Pyres" definitely set the tone for the band's following third full-length album.

Caravan (2021)[]

With the pandemic putting any tour plans on ice, in September 2020 the band entered the studio to record their third full-length album 'Caravan'. Once again the album was recorded at Descent Studios and mixed and mastered by Dionysis Dimitrakos, while drums were recorded at Ignite Studio.

“Caravan” is the band’s upcoming third full-length album. It is the direct successor to last year’s “Under Acid Hoof” and the fourth release of the band with HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS . It was conceived, recorded and produced during a state of total lockdown due to Covid-19, therefore it greatly reflects our mood during these dark times. It is a heavy, sublime and pitch black journey into the vast unknown. Like all of our previous works, “Caravan” was recorded, mixed and mastered with Dionysis Dimitrakos of Descent studio in Athens, while drums were recorded at Ignite Music Studio . The artwork was once again crafted by Branca Studio . It is a witchy album for witchy ears, a heavy opus that has emerged straight from the deepest abyss. Once again the father and son duo on guitars offer the listener a horde of crushing, fuzzy, Iommi riffs while the mammoth bass tears down everything in its path with its acid hooves. Its drums are thundering unearthly beats of harrowing doom while its mesmerizing vocals will bewitch you with their words of woe. Heavier and more diverse than its predecessor, “Caravan” is here to tear you down with its acid tusks."

'Caravan' was released in March 5th by Heavy Psych Sounds Records alongside the first ever vinyl pressing of the band's self-titled debut album featuring a brand new cover by Branca Studio, as well as a vinyl repress of 'Under Acid Hoof' featuring two bonus tracks. The music video for the song 'Caravan' premiered at Decibel Magazine and was very well received by the doom community. 'Caravan' as well as 'Acid Mammoth' were repressed on vinyl pretty soon afterwards, while 'Under Acid Hoof' was repressed twice.

Following the release of 'Caravan', the band started preparing for touring which was set to happen as soon as the world returned to a new state of normalcy after the pandemic.

Touring (2021-2023)[]

In the three years following the release of Caravan (2021-2023), the band focused exclusively on playing live, doing two European tours across multiple countries, as well as playing a lot of shows across Europe, including festivals such as Desertfest Belgium twice (2021 & 2022), Desertfest London (2023), Sonic Blast Fest (2023) and Stoned from the Underground (2023).
