8 is the eighth studio album by the Italian band Ufomammut. Recorded in 2016 and drawing from themes of the infinite, 8 would be released by Supernatural Cat Records (Italy) and Neurot Recordings (North America) to critical acclaim. Notably it would prove to be the last studio album to feature original drummer Vita, who would leave the band in January 2020.
Background[]
Work would begin on 8 in 2016 following the touring cycle for 2015's Ecate, nearly a year before the albums release. Drawing from the themes of 8 and and the infinite, aligning with the fact that the band would be recording their eighth album, Urlo would explain the themes and recording process in an interview with Nine Circles:
“ | “Everything came out of the idea that this is the eighth album for us.
The number 8 is also the infinite symbol that has plenty of different meanings and, moreover, you can pronounce the title differently in every language. So, the number 8 was the perfect match for this album title!
We try to compose and record every album in a different way, trying to do something different from what we’ve already done. The evolution of 8 has been very peculiar, because it’s been the first time we recorded all together. Also the writing process has been different from the past, we started from one song to create the other and we worked a lot on the idea of being able to play everything live for the recording sessions.” |

On 21 March 2017 details on 8 would be announced, including it's September release date. The press release notes that the band would record together live in the studio for the first time, essentially creating an experience of eight uninterrupted songs and that the title can be interpreted in any iteration or translation of "8".[2] To promote the album, a music video and single for Warsheep would be premiered on 15 June 2017.[3]
8 would be released on 22 September 2017 as a CD digipak, along with two vinyl editions: A standard Black Vinyl edition and a special Red vinyl edition, limited to 500 copies with alternate artwork. Ufomammut would tour Europe through 2018 and North America in 2019 performing the entirety of the album in support, also leading into the band's twentieth anniversary.
8 would attain critical praise from several publications. Angry Metal Guy, awarding a 4/5 score, describes 8 as "a massive and expertly crafted grinding stone, a pounding and hypnotizing journey through cosmic atmospheres that crushes with the force of a black hole but doesn’t relinquish groove in the process." and "a complete victory for Ufomammut.".[4] Tim Ledin of Ghost Cult Magazine would award a 9/10 score, citing that the album "is able to keep the same framework of remaining heavy, doomy, yet trippy but also standing out from one another." and ultimately stating that 8 "is an album that is as blemish-free as some of the classics.".[5] Doodlehound would award the album a "Highest Possible Recommendation" nod (10/10) would note the band's "refined this mix of heaviness and wild time signatures, jazzy and scientific in their nature but also managed to tighten up this sound to the point it never becomes wholly repetitious for the sake of length nor entirely predictable." along with experimenting and noting that the songs could actually flow in any order, stating "the momentum never really loses regardless of how the path branches and the transitions still feel smooth!".[6] Other reviewers whom praised the album albeit in scoreless form would include The Obelisk,[7] Echoes and Dust,[8] Your Last Rites,[9] No Clean Singing[10] and Outlaws of The Sun[11] among others.
