5ive are an instrumental rock/post-metal duo originating from Boston, Massachusetts. Consisting of Ben Carr and Charlie Harrold, this group performs largely instrumental rock with elements of math rock, post-rock, post-hardcore and doom metal. To date the group has released three albums with a handful of side releases, with vocals being a rarity.
Ben Carr described the band in an interview with Carl Shultz: "5ive shapes tones and experiments with analog waveforms. Our sound has always been described as an organic sound, it has natural truth to it and though it is not always a happy or uplifting message, you cannot deny it".
5ive would mark their beginnings in 2000 though the band's early history outside of studio output is largely unknown. Within a year of forming the band would release two studio albums. First the band would release an eponymous self-titled via Tortuga Recordings, featuring Jeff Caxide (ISIS) on bass. Later in that same year 5ive releases The Telestic Disfracture, featuring Jonah Jenkins (Milligram) on vocals.
In 2003, the band changed their name to '5ive's Continuum Research Project' and released, The Hemophiliac Dream which again included Jeff Caxide on bass. It featured only two tracks, the almost 23-minute-long "The Hemophiliac Dream, Pt. 1" and a remix by James Plotkin. In 2004, they released a Split with Kid606.
In 2006, they changed their name back to 5ive and released Versus, which originally was a tour-only EP from 2004, which included a two-stage remix of the track "Soma", the latter being remixed by Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu). In 2008, they released their third studio album in Hesperus, described by The Guardian as "fast, heavy and pleasingly unfussy, but with enough spry, sub-surface shifts and stop-start surprises to be highly satisfying".
In 2017, 5ive would compose a Bandcamp page and upload most of their studio output along with previously unreleased live performances. The status of the band itself is largely unknown but Ben Carr has since moved on to two different musical projects: INTRCPTR (A two-piece post-rock group with Larry Herweg of Pelican) and Ancient Lights (A post-metal band featuring Adam Richardson of Lord of Putrefaction, Ramesses and 11Paranoias).
