26 Songs is a compilation album by Melvins, originally recorded in 1986 and released in the Spring of 2003. 26 Songs comprises almost all of the recorded sessions the Melvins would record in the sessions for Six Songs, along with outtakes and other demos (With exception to the four songs that were recorded for the Deep Six compilation.). The CD reissue would also include liner notes by Buzz Osborne talking about the Seattle scene at the time, the Deep Six release party and the recording sessions of Six Songs.
Tracks 1 - 10 would comprise the sessions for 10 Songs released in 1991. Tracks 11 - 16 would comprise the original Six Songs 7", ripped directly from an original vinyl copy. Tracks 17 - 19 would come from a bootleg 7" entitled Outtakes From First 7". Track 20-24 are garage demos, track 20 having previously appeared on the Northwest Hardcore compilation tape and track 22 on the Let's Kiss compilation tape from K Records. An alternate version of "Ever Since My Accident" was available on the Kill Rock Stars compilation (KRS-201) in superior quality.
The track listing on the booklet of the CD lists 26 tracks but the CD only has 25 tracks as "Ever Since My Accident" and "Hugh" are together on track 25 and not individual tracks as credited. "Hugh" was a long-lost b-side of the demo cassettes the band would give away to venues and labels to promote the band. The final track would be a field recording of a guy high on Angel Dust hanging out with the band, leading to a loose 12-bar blues jam. The band recorded it on the spot and forgot about it until years later when a friend of the band gave them a copy of the demo with the field recording on it.[1]
26 Songs would attain generally positive reviews, notably citing the band's pacing going slower from their hardcore roots and the general rawness of the early recordings.[2][3][4][5]
