(Godzilla's) Eatin' Dust (Also stylized as Godzilla's/Eatin' Dust and Godzilla's Eatin' Dust) is the fifth studio album by the California stoner rock band Fu Manchu. It would be released on CD and LP circa 19 February 1999 on the now defunct Man's Ruin label.[1] The album combines two 10" EPs to comprise the album: Godzilla (Released in 1997) and Eatin' Dust (Released as a 10" in March 1999).[2]

Background[]

Godzilla's/Eatin' Dust was the second album for new members Brant Bjork and Bob Balch, who replaced Ruben Romano and Eddie Glass. Notably, Godzilla would be the first recordings for Brant Bjork on drums and was recorded before 1997's The Action Is Go. The Godzilla session would feature Josh Homme of Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age, contributing percussion and production. The session also featured a session guitarist named "Mike Coopersmith", who has been speculated to be bandleader Scott Hill but has been later confirmed to be Homme. The Eatin' Dust sessions would feature the normal lineup, with Bob Balch on lead guitar.[3]

Both sessions were recorded in a single day. The Godzilla sessions would be recorded on 19 October 1996 at Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, California while the Eatin' Dust sessions were recorded on 22 November 1998 ay Monkey Studios in Palm Springs, California. "Godzilla" would be a cover of the Blue Öyster Cult song, originally from their 1977 album "Spectres". "Mongoose" would be shortened and re-recorded for the 2001 album California Crossing, along with being used for a Toyota commercial for the 2008 Super Bowl.[4]

Several versions of the album have been released in various formats. It was re-issued on Elastic Records in 2004 with a slightly reversed track order (The Eatin' Dust sessions as the first five tracks and a reversed order of the Godzilla sessions for tracks 6 - 8) and artwork. In 2010, the band's own label At The Dojo Records re-issued the album, with the same track order as the 2004 reissue and slightly different artwork.

In 2019, the album was again re-issued with four previously-unreleased tracks as Godzilla's/Eatin' Dust +4. The added tracks, also from the original "Godzilla" sessions, are early versions of three songs that later appeared on 1997’s The Action Is Go, and a cover of Thin Lizzy's "Jailbreak" (a different version than that released on the 1998 Jailbreak 7”).

(Godzilla's) Eatin' Dust has recieved positive reception from numerous critics, both at the time and retroactively.[5][6][7][8]
